Summer 2011

We are in the process of collecting feedback from all the students we helped place this past summer. If you haven't already answered our questionnaire, please let us know how the summer went for you!

This will help us guide families for the summer of 2012. We will meet in 3 weeks to go over all the placements we made and compare how everyone felt about the programs they attended.

In addition, we are collecting new information for next summer! So, please check out our webpage and give us a call or send us an email. We would love to help you again find exciting activities!

Annual meeting

The consultants of Camp and Teen Travel had our annual meeting in our Connecticut office last month. We reviewed the reports of the students we placed last summer and got great feedback! You found the camps welcoming, met campers from other areas of the country and from around the world. You loved being on college campuses and enjoyed your classes. Those of you who traveled had a great time, and your parents felt safe with the people you went with!

We are learning of new and exciting programs for 2011. Some of these are community service trips to Ecuador and Peru, new leadership programs on US college campuses, and some shorter (2 week) sessions at camps with traditionally longer stays. Stay tuned as we get new information from programs who are currently planning their 2011 schedules.

want to hear about last summer?

We are in the process of contacting kids who went on programs and attended camps we recommended this past summer. Here are some of the comments from our California office:

Christopher loved it. He said it was great socially and academically; although I think the social aspect was the most important for him.
He loved Barcelona. He complained that they didn’t have enough free time to just hang. As a parent, that is great news, less trouble to be found!!!!

Carly’s trip was fantastic! She blossomed and really pushed herself to do things, e.g. take the redeye to Newark, alone, to meet a leader at 7am ALL BY HERSELF; go ALL ALONE on the trip with no friend; go for 3 weeks instead of two; eat baby termites (yuck!); live in conditions less than comfortable with bugs, etc; and she loved it all.

Ashley really enjoyed camp and had lots of fun there. She really wants to go back.
The camp was very good with us, too and very accommodating. I loved that we could call the our children the second week they were there. They had lots of activities and encouraged the kids to do a lot of them. Ashley said she was very busy every day and made lots of friends and as a girl on her own it was easy to make friends.

We will post more as we receive them! We are already getting calls for next summer, so keep in touch!

Another great book for parents

For every parent who has had a child at camp, there is a parent waiting by the mailbox hoping for a letter chronicling news about new friends, fun activities and unique experiences. Going to sleepaway camp can be full of unimaginable happenings, some funny, some touching, some emotional and some heart-wrenching. It is always the comical or unexpected that are the most memorable. Vicariously we can live through them through the words of our children however slanted they may be!
This delightful compilation of actual letters from real kids assembled by Diane Falanga is called P.S. I Hate It Here!! Kids’ Letters From Camp. It is a great read for any parent with a child away at camp. It is amazing how universal these letters are.
Write us about letters you have received. We have a book to give away to a random responder. We hope to hear from you soon!!!

Great book to read for new campers

JEMMA HARTMAN, camper extraordiane by Brenda Ferber is a wonderful example of how a book can help initiate discussion about fears a camper may have in anticipation of going away for the first time. It is a fabulous find for both mothers and daughters to share and many of my clients have read it for their mother-daughter book groups.
Jemma is going to Camp Star Lake with Tammy, her former best friend who has moved away. She looks forward to having a perfect summer with her, sharing activities and fun like it used to be. She doesn’t anticipate that her once solid friendship has changed. Nor does foresee Tammy’s cousin, Brooke, also attending, creating a threesome and lots of anxiety.
Although Jemma may know what the camp will look like and what the schedule is like, she can’t predict the actions of other campers. She feels excluded by Tammy, in competition with Brooke, and plagued by Delaney, the camp oddball. In this touching story Jemma learns through experience how to manage relationships and build friendships.
A anonymous quote prefacing the book says it all: “You can’t control the wind, but you can adjust your sail.”

California teen ideas

There are so many new activities for teens in California for 2010. There's lots more community service, on campuses in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles where you can work with children, animals, the elderly, the environment, the needy and so much more! Work in San Francisco at Glide Memorial, with marine mammals, and at Lake Tahoe. Work with Habitat for Humanity and Ronald McDonald House in Southern California. Call us for these ideas and others!
